“God delivered me from evil and placed me in Michigan”

That’s what a man wrote before shooting up his hotel room and putting the alarm clock in the microwave oven.

A 53-year-old Dearborn Heights man was arrested about 8:30 a.m. at the Albion Inn, 27644 C. Drive North, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. No one else was in the room and no one was hurt, said Kim Turpin, manager of the Albion Inn.

The man, whose name is not being released, left a note inside the room that read, “God delivered me from evil and placed me in Albion, Michigan,” with today’s date, Turpin said.

He checked in Saturday night and said he needed a room for the night, Turpin said. She did not know what caused the man to start shooting. He destroyed the inside of the hotel room, shooting the bed, a window, the walls and the ceiling. He also put the room’s alarm clock in the microwave and turned on the microwave.

When sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Albion Public Safety Department arrived, the man was still shooting. He shot one round through the door while officers waited outside, a release from the sheriff’s office said. The bullet struck a maintenance door across the hallway, Turpin said.

Officers convinced the man to surrender. He was arrested and taken to the Calhoun County Jail for felonious assault, possession of a firearm while committing a felony, destruction of property and reckless discharge of a firearm, according to the release.

The man legally possessed the gun, which was registered in his name. He had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

It was the second time police had been called to the hotel Sunday. Before 6:30 a.m., someone reported by cell phone there was a man with a gun at the hotel, but officers went there and did not find anything.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Latta said deputies believe the man may have called 911 himself.
