Conspiracy: Man crashes car into bank, claims CIA is after him

Man crashes car into bank claims CIA is after himA Fort Myers man who believed the CIA is after him trying to have him killed with radiation guns because of his YouTube rants about the nation’s banking system, slammed his green Honda into the front of a Naples bank Saturday night, according to police reports.

Phil Nguyen, 24, was arrested on a felony charge of criminal mischief over $1,000, and remained behind bars Monday.

The door Nguyen drove through was right below an FBI office in the four-story Collier Place office building at 3001 U.S. 41 N. However, Naples police aren’t treating the case as an attack on the bureau.

“It seemed to be he had some other issues going on,” Capt. John Adams said of Nguyen.

Nguyen drove through the front doors of the Comerica Bank around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to reports. The bank’s doors are in the back of the office building, and are not visible from U.S. 41 North.

When police and firefighters arrived, they found Nguyen sitting inside his car, which was lodged 20 to 30 feet inside of the bank. He had driven through the double glass doors, past the reception desk, through a wall and into a conference room, Naples Fire Chief Steve McInerny said.

Glass and debris covered the ground. Tire marks outside the building were consistent with Nguyen spinning his tires to gain speed. Nguyen later admitted that after driving into the bank, he backed up and drove into it again to cause more damage.

“It would have to be a pretty high rate of speed,” McInerny said of the force necessary to drive the Honda that far inside the building. “It was a perfect hit on those front doors.”

Nguyen was conscious and breathing when officers arrived, but appeared disoriented, reports said. He would not get out of the car, and was removed by an officer. While on the ground, Nguyen said he intentionally rammed into the bank because he was upset with financial institutions, according to reports.

He was then transported to NCH Downtown Naples Hospital.

At the hospital he told officers that he believed the CIA had been sending large doses of radiation to him in retaliation for his YouTube posts about the United States’ banking system, which he believes is unconstitutional, reports said. Nguyen, who reports said works at a local hotel, told police that he believed that clients at the hotel were using radiation guns on him, and that he only had five hours to live.

“He said he wasn’t trying to harm himself or others,” McInerny said. “He was babbling a lot of different things about the CIA.”

Damage was estimated at about $150,000, McInerny said.
